Its versatility – accessibility and strategic location – means it buzzes with life most of the year. The name "Hala" (Pasture) evokes its pastoral past, but today, tourism and nature conservation within the Tatra National Park (TPN) dominate.

  • 1947-1948: PTT builds the current shelter (design by Bogdan Laszczka).
  • 1950: Expansion with an additional wing.
  • April 26, 1953: A powerful rock avalanche; a 30-ton boulder crashes into the dining hall (still next to the shelter today).
  • 1947-1980: Managed by Stanisław Skupień.

To Kondratowa Pasture: Trail from Kuźnice (Blue)

The main and most popular trail, ideal for families with children.

  • Start: Kuźnice (approx. 1010-1025 m a.s.l.).
  • Trail color: Blue 🟦.
  • Route: Brother Albert's Road → Albertine Sisters' Monastery → Kalatówki Glade (PTTK Kalatówki Mountain Hotel, crocuses in spring) → Kondratowa Pasture.
  • Distance: approx. 3.5 km.
  • Hiking time: 1 hr 10 min – 1 hr 30 min (one way).
  • Elevation gain: approx. 310 m.
  • Difficulty: Easy (rocky surface, not suitable for strollers).

This trail, thanks to its accessibility, is often the first contact with the Tatras for many tourists and plays an important role in ecological education.

Alternatives and Winter Variant

You can also reach it from Mała Łąka Valley (yellow trail to Kondracka Pass, then blue trail down, approx. 4 hours).

Kondratowa Pasture is a popular destination for ski touring in winter (the route from Kuźnice to the shelter is considered avalanche-safe). Winter hiking is possible with appropriate equipment (crampons/microspikes, poles).

Further from the Pasture: Giewont and Kopa Kondracka

To Giewont (1894 m a.s.l.)

  • Trail: Blue 🟦 from the shelter → Kondracka Pass (1725 m) → Giewont.
  • Section Shelter - Pass: approx. 1 hr - 1 hr 25 min, 1.8 km, elevation gain 390 m, "somewhat difficult", through the "Piekło" (Hell) gully.
  • Section Pass - Giewont: Exposed final section, chains, one-way traffic, "quite difficult".
  • Total time from the shelter: approx. 1 hr 45 min – 2 hr 5 min.

Giewont with its characteristic cross (1901) is an icon of the Tatras. The trail requires good fitness and caution.

To Kopa Kondracka (2005 m a.s.l.)

The first easily accessible two-thousander from the Pasture, part of Czerwone Wierchy (Red Peaks).

Option 1 (via Przełęcz pod Kopą Kondracką pass):

  • Shelter → Przełęcz pod Kopą Kondracką (1863 m): Green trail 🟩, approx. 1 hr 10 min - 1 hr 20 min, "somewhat difficult".
  • Pass → Kopa Kondracka: Red trail 🟥, approx. 20 min.

Option 2 (via Kondracka Pass):

  • Shelter → Kondracka Pass (1725 m): Blue trail 🟦, approx. 1 hr - 1 hr 25 min.
  • Pass → Kopa Kondracka: Yellow trail 🟨, approx. 40 min, "somewhat difficult".

Landscape 🏞️

Kondratowa Valley, a branch of Bystra Valley, has a flat bottom – a remnant of a moraine lake. Built of limestone, it is a "dry valley" (water flows underground). The Kondratowy Stream fills with water after rains.

Flora 🌸

The Pasture (1333 m a.s.l.) lies on the border of the upper montane zone and the dwarf pine zone. In summer, "lush vegetation and carpets of flowers".

  • Upper Montane Zone (up to 1550 m): Spruce forest, rowan, birch, stone pine.
  • Dwarf Pine Zone (up to 1800 m): Dense thickets of dwarf mountain pine (*Pinus mugo*), rowan.
  • Alpine Zone (above 1800 m): High mountain meadows, deergrass (sit skucina), matgrass (boimka dwurzędowa).

Characteristic plants: Crocuses (Kalatówki Glade in spring), rare: matricary grapefern (podejźrzon rutolistny), small yellow star-of-Bethlehem (złoć mała). You can also find edelweiss, martagon lily. All TPN vegetation is strictly protected.

Fauna 🐾

TPN is a sanctuary for many species. In the Kondratowa Valley area, you can encounter:

  • Brown bears: Observed on the Pasture, they forage in blueberry patches.
  • Red deer: Rutting season in autumn.
  • Chamois and roe deer.
  • Marmots: In higher parts.

Getting to Kuźnice 🚌

Private car access to Kuźnice is prohibited.

  • Local minibuses from Zakopane: Regularly, e.g., from Rondo Kuźnickie (approx. 5-10 PLN).
  • Taxi: From Rondo Kuźnickie (approx. 20 PLN).
  • On foot: From car parks near Rondo Jana Pawła II or Wielka Krokiew (approx. 20 min walk, 2 km).

Car parks in Zakopane are paid (e.g., 23 PLN for a few hours).
